Non-Established Treatments

 

Because of the severity and chronicity of autism and related conditions, numerous

treatments have been proposed that, to date, lack empirical evidence. Some

alternative treatments have little or questionable scientific basis but the proposed

treatment bears relatively little risk to the patient. Other alternative treatments

pose a danger to the patient and the family in that unfounded promises of potential

cure are stated or implied. Another group of alternative treatments has the

potential for direct serious harm to the affected child. Families should be helped

to make informed decisions about their use of treatments. Treatments that pose

some risk to the child and/or family should be actively discouraged.
